We are committed to recruiting the best students into this program and providing them with the best training experience possible. Our aim is to provide students with the skills and accomplishments necessary to become the next generation of leaders in the biological sciences.

We currently have about 80 students working toward the Ph.D. degree in all the areas of modern biology, and our time to graduation is 5.4 years, which is below the national average. We graduate 10-15 Ph.D.s a year, and our graduates go on to have excellent careers.

More information about the program including application materials, sample course work, a list of our doctoral faculty and profiles of graduates of the program can be found on the Division’s website: More information can be obtained by contacting Professor Alexander (, Professor Semlitsch (, or our Graduate Student Coordinator, Ms. Nila Emerich (
